The New York State Bar Association entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bar Association of Serbia during a virtual ceremony today.

The agreement provides a framework for the two bar associations to discuss issues such as trade, international business transactions, commercial disputes, human rights, and the transnational delivery of legal services.

“You never know where your connections are going to lead you. Our collaboration with diverse groups of individuals and their desire to become involved with our association has helped get us to where we are today after our potential partnership was originally discussed more than two years ago,” said Sherry Levin Wallach, president of the New York State Bar Association.

Jasmina Milutinovic, president of the Bar Association of Serbia, and Tamara Kenworthey and Lea Gerasimovic, NYSBA Serbia Chapter co-chairs of the association’s International Section, and Section Chair Azish Filabi also attended the ceremony.

“I have reached out to bar associations large and small, across the state of New York, across the country and the territories, and around the world to offer our friendship and to forge these important alliances. The goals are many, but the overarching theme of our affiliations is to protect and defend the rule of law, and to ensure that the law is applied equally and fairly to all while fostering diversity, equity and inclusion in our profession,” added Levin Wallach.

The Memorandum of Understanding is the seventh agreement the New York State Bar Association has signed with bar associations during Levin Wallach’s presidential tenure.

The Bar Association of Serbia was founded in 1886 as the Association of Legal Representatives of the Kingdom of Serbia. Its mission is to preserve and raise the moral reputation of the Bar Association in Serbia and to nurture and improve legal sciences.
