NYSBA Broadens Its Reach By Partnering With 4 Bar Associations on 2 Continents

The New York State Bar Association has added bar associations in Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Barcelona to its international partnerships, and plans to sign an agreement with the Rome Bar Association next week.

The agreements, formally known as Memorandums of Understanding, strengthen relationships between lawyers around the world, give the New York State Bar Association a stronger voice in international legal affairs, and provide educational opportunities for members of all the bar associations involved.

“We recognize the growing importance of trade around the world and the need for closer ties between people in the legal profession,” T. Andrew Brown, president of the New York State Bar Association, said at an April 27 signing ceremony with the Madrid and Barcelona bar associations. “At this time in our history, it is imperative that lawyers in our communities, in our state, and across the globe come together and stand up for the rule of law.”

Barcelona Bar Association Vice President Susana Ferrer, speaking at the ceremony in Madrid, echoed Brown’s comments.

“Today we are aware of the need to protect human rights. Now more than ever, international law is a useful tool in defense of human rights. These agreements make that possible,” she said.

On May 11, the New York State Bar Association will sign its 22nd agreement – this time with the Rome Bar Association. The virtual ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. followed by a webinar on reforms in the Italian Civil Justice System.

The signing of the agreements with Madrid, the largest bar association in Europe, and Barcelona took place on April 27 during the spring meeting of the International Section of the New York State Bar Association in Madrid. On April 20, the association signed the agreement with the Buenos Aires City Bar Association at the Consulate of Argentina in New York City.

The following international organizations have also signed agreements with the New York State Bar Association: The International Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, Panama Bar Association, Singapore Management University, Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association, International Association of Lawyers, Seoul Bar Association, Sao Paulo Bar, Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association, Bucharest Bar Association, Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum, Milan Bar Association, Osaka Bar Association, Philippine Bar Association, Georgian Bar Association, Ukrainian Bar Association, and the International Association of Young Lawyers.

The New York State Bar Association has also signed similar agreements with the International Law Section of the Florida Bar Association and BARBRI, which offers bar exam preparation to international students.
