NYSBA’s Annual Meeting 2023 Steps off in NYC

Thousands of NYSBA members and attorneys descend on the Big Apple for Annual Meeting 2023. This is the first in-person Annual Meeting in three years and is NYSBA’s largest event of the year.
Attendees took part in 17 programs and events, hosted by 11 sections, at the first of a five-day hybrid Annual Meeting.
- Stolen elections, J. Edgar Hoover, and every NYSBA member agreed that they are thankful social media didn’t exist when they were in college and law school. Just a few of many topics at the General Practice Section and Committee on Professional Discipline on ethics and professionalism at Annual Meeting 2023.
- A packed house of NYSBA members heard from and asked questions of several judges to about the impact of Covid-19 at the that state and federal courts. The introduction of video conferencing and the volume of cases as a result were just a few of the topics included – as well as non NYS attorneys.
- Zack McDermott, a Brooklyn Public Defender shared his professional and personal experiences in mental health and the legal system. McDermott was joined by his mother, Laura Barcella, Libby Coreno, cochair of NYSBA’s Attorney Well-Being Committee and NYSBA President Sherry Levin Wallach to share his story at the President’s Summit. McDermott has become on out-spoken advocate for taking a fresh look at how the legal industry addresses mental health issues. In his book, The Gorilla and the Bird: A Memoir of Madness and a Mother’s Love, Zack shares his unforgettable psychotic breakdown and his experience in the legal community.
- Our members took a moment at Annual Meeting to honor three extraordinary individuals at the Constance Baker Motley Symposium. Retired federal Judge Randolph Treece received the John E. Higgins Diversity Trailblazer Award. Ross Moskowitz, a partner at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan also received the John E. Higgins Diversity Trailblazer Award. Ronelle Porter, assistant deputy chair, Capital Markets and Corporate at Loeb & Loeb was honored with the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Beacon Award.
- “The slow process of getting to yes,” navigating through Merger Enforcement Changes on the horizon under the Biden Administration, was a panel discussion for the Antitrust Section. Attorneys heard best practices as antitrust agencies have changed their approaches to remedies and willingness to litigate in merger investigations.
- The first day of Annual Meeting 2023 wrapped up with the President’s Reception: A Celebration of Diversity.
