The Supreme Court This Term: What Direction Will it Take?
Since its recent decision overturning Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs case, the Supreme Court has been under fire as never before. In his concurring opinion in Dobbs, Justice Clarence Thomas suggested that the court would revisit earlier holdings finding a right to contraception, same-sex marriage and other long-established liberties. A substantial number of Americans now question the very legitimacy of the court, viewing it more as a group of partisan hacks bent on advancing their political objectives than as an objective and fair judicial institution worthy of their respect and support. What should we expect next from the nation’s highest court, now that a five-member ultraconservative supermajority seems to be driving its agenda? Two highly regarded experts who closely follow the evolution of the court, Prof. Sam Estreicher of NYU Law School and Prof. Rick Rossein of CUNY Law School, will share their thoughts and expectations with us regarding what to make of the current court and where it is likely headed.
