10 Tips for Practicing in General Practice

In February 2022, the General Practice Section participated in a law student roundtable discussion that provided current law students with a better understanding on the experiences, rewards, and challenges practicing attorneys have faced in General Practice while offering insight on the various career opportunities available.
From this discussion one of the panelists, Robert E Brown, Esq., from the Law Offices of Robert E. Brown, PC, compiled 10 tips for law students who are pursuing a career in General Practice:
- In law school, you don’t have to decide your practice area(s).
- General Practice doesn’t mean you handle every case that comes through the door.
- You get to pick and choose what types of cases you want to handle.
- You get to decide when to add or subtract a practice area.
- Network to get business and connections.
- Volunteer in new practice areas that may interest you.
- You can have two, three, four or more practice areas.
- Take classes in law school as well as CLE classes to increase your knowledge of a particular area of law.
- Find a mentor.
- Join the NYSBA General Practice Section and find people that are willing to assist you with virtually every area of law.
